FAQ

Engine

bulletMy VVC powered F/TF sounds like a diesel when I first start it up.
bulletTo a certain extent this is fairly normal. Excessive noise (what's excessive ??) however can indicate the need for an oil change. Its important not to rev the engine when its cold as it takes a while for the oil to get up to the camshafts.

bulletHow does the K series VVC mechanism work?
bulletHave a look at this page from the Sands Mechanical Museum web site. Thanks to Debs on .Org for the link.

bulletWhy does only one exhaust pipe work on my TF?
bulletbecause there is a valve, the EVC (Exhaust Volume Control) valve, fitted to the off side pipe. It was fitted to reduce noise at low revs. It was disconnected by many dealers on new TF's as part of the PDI. It can be disconnected in two ways.
bulleteasy way - find the valve just behind the tail pipe, you will see a pipe coming from it, pull it off, plug the end (I used a self tapping screw), and tie wrap it out of the way. With the pipe disconnected the valve is open.
bulletthe not so easy way - I'll let Rob Bell explain the procedure here.

bulletWhat does a Daytona exhaust sound like?, and a Miltek, Bastuck, Janspeed.....
bulletHave a look at the Tips & Tricks ~ Exhaust page on this web site.

bulletWhere can I buy a Daytona exhaust from?, or a Miltek, Bastuck, Janspeed.....
bulletA Daytona can be purchased from Mike Satur, this page for a TF and this page for the F.
bulletA Miltek can be purchased from Brown & Gammons.
bulletAn Xpower can be purchased from any Xpart outlet, or from the MG-Rover.org on-line shop, don't forget the 10% discount if your a supporter, or if your after the Janspeed version, from PTP's on-line shop. Bear in mind that there are three variations of the 'XPower' exhaust, but I believe only two types are available.
bulletA Scorpion can be purchased from the MGF Centre.
bulletA Pipedream/Blueflame can be purchased from Abingdon MG Parts Ltd, click here for the F, and click here for the TF system.
bulletA Bastuck can be purchased from XTec-Tuning.de, I hope your German is good!!.
bulletA Supersports exhaust can be purchased from MGOC Accessories. These exhausts are made by Tiger Exhausts.
bulletA DTM style exhaust can be purchased from Moss Europe Ltd.
bulletA Phoenix system can be purchased direct from Phoenix Performance Exhausts Ltd, or from TR Bitz, don't let the TR's fool you!!. Its also possible that Techspeed can supply them as well.
bulletAnother option is a Peco system, these are made to order with a choice of tail pipes.
bulletThere is also the Trevor Taylor TT Extreme system, but since this is a limited production system, its not easy to get one. Of the two production runs there has been, I've only ever seen one for sale. And boy are they loud !!!, I've been in Steve White's TF which has one fitted, it sounds fantastic, but I couldn't live with it on a daily basis. So if you want one, keep your eyes on the various forum's for sale sections. Check out the TT Exhausts web site for further information.

bulletI have seen these 25BHP chips on Ebay, do they work?
bulletNO they do not work, its a scam, and they could potentially damage your engine. They make they engine think its getting colder air than it actually is getting, not good.
bulletHave a look at this page from Rob Bell's website about other dodgy claims, like the 'Electric Supercharger', and the 'bolt on Oil Cooler'

bulletWhat is the difference between MG's  VVC and Honda's VTECH/Toyota's VVT-I engines?
bulletA thread on MG-Rover.org's forum discussed this, with input from Andy Phillips, Mike Satur and Rob Bell, its full of informed thoughts.

bulletWhere are the maximum and minimum coolant level marks?
bulletIts not that obvious where these marks are on the expansion tank, so DotComoff shows you graphically here.

bulletMy tick over has become erratic, is there anything I can do?
bulletIt may be worth while resetting the stepper motor, here are the instructions -
    1) Start the engine and warm up to a normal working temperature.
    2) Turn off the ignition.
    3) Turn on ignition to stage II (with electric window available but don't start the engine).
    4) Press the accelerator all the way down and fully release five times repeatedly.
    5) Wait for at least 15 seconds and then turn off the ignition.

bulletStarting problems
bulletHave a look at look at this page from Tony Thompson's web site

bulletThere is black smoke coming from my exhaust, what does it mean?
bulletHave a look at this self diagnosis web site, Troubleshooting Engine Performance Problems. Five pages full of possible answers to engine performance problems.

bulletA have a loud ticking noise coming from my engine, what could it be?
bulletIt could be air in the hydraulic tappets after the engine has stood for a long period, a nice long drive should cure it.
bulletif it can only be heard when the engine is cold, you probably have a VVC engine, an oil change may quieten the tapping.
bulletIn Iain 'Broon' Brown's case, it was a manifold nut that was loose !!!. This is Iain's original thread, the cure is here on MG-Rover.org and here on the MGF Register forum.

bulletSensor and other useful part locations
bulletCJJ created this great thread on the MG-Rover.org forum showing the locations of sensors and other parts that owners often ask for.
Alternatively, click on the links below to go directly to the appropriate picture. Thanks also to 1955diesel for his input.
